Botany

History of Botany Section of Biology Department:

Since 1982, the botanical studies have been in Biology Department. To the year 1999,  there have been small botanical garden, small greenhouse, student laboratory and herbarium. In that building herbarium was in the laboratory of Botany. After the year 1999, in Gullapoglu Campus the number of student and research laboratories increased. In that building there were Systematic Research Laboratory, Cell Biology Laboratory, Plant Cell Culture Laboratory, Plant Systematics and Plant Physiology Laboratory and Herbarium.

Botany Section divided to Plant Systematics, Plant Physiology, Plant Morphology and Anatomy. Herbarium is the first center structure that has founded national and international. EDTU Herbarium is founded by Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Demiriz (Istanbul University, Science Faculty, Botany Section) in the year 1983 when Prof. Dr. Goksel Olgun worked in Biology Department in Trakya University. The studies began with lots of plant specimens. EDTU Herbarium recorded as INDEX Herbarium to the International INDEX  in 17 June 2009 by Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Aybeke with Prof. Dr. Feruzan Dane.

Herbarium website is as follows: http://edtuherbaryum.trakya.edu.tr

There are 13500 recorded plant specimens in the herbarium. Among these specimens  there are 3 typus specimen as new records for the World, 10 specimens as records for Economic Botany Collections, 1 specimen as fossil record which is given as a gift by BakiKasaplıgil, 291 plant specimens belonged to Kasaplıgil Collection, 467 specimens for seed/fruit collections, 82 wood/cone specimens and 159 specimens for fungi collection of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Asan.

In Botany Section, there are 6 researchers including 2 professor, 2 assoc. prof. dr., 1 assist. prof. dr. and 1 dr. Laborant.

There are four research groups in Botany Section. These are Plant Systematics and Morphology, Plant Anatomy and Morphology, Plant Physiology and Biotechnology and Plant Embryology, Environmental Toxicology and Plant Molecular Biology and Genetics.

Plant Systematics and Morphology:

In this research group; local, floristic and revision studies are made, endemic rare plants, geophytes,   and molecular systematic studies with clasic studies are investigated. Botany Section was in co-operation with national and international instutions and placed in different projects such as (GEF-II, Bioreserve Projects, Cross-Border Cooperation Projects, TUBITAK Projects etc.). There are courses about Dendrology and Education of Nature.

Plant Morphology and Anatomy:

In this group, morphological, anatomical, karyological, palinological properties of  meadow, rare, endemic, medicinal, plants which grow in European Turkey are investigated. In Palinology branch; aeropalynological and pollen morphology studies are observed.

Plant Physiology and Biotechnology:

Plant stress becaused of high and low temperature and salt, heavy metals, responses for stress factors etc. are investigated. Plant cell culture studies including meristem, embryo and anther culture are made.

Plant Embryology:

Light and TEM microscobe studies including cytochemical and histochemical studies on plant embryology are studied.

Environmental Toxicology :

Phytotoxical, cytotoxical and cytogenetical effects of dirty water, pesticides and surfactants on plant morphology, anatomy, cytology are investigated. SEM and TEM techniques are used for these studies.

Plant Molecular Biology and Genetics.

The plants molecular genetic studies on especially problematic genus and species and also on  plant diseases.are investigated.
