Ecotoxicology

“Ecotoxicology”, which examines the negative effects of chemicals  on the environment, is a sub-science of toxicology. Although this definition evokes animal venom, microbial or plant-derived toxins in our environment, the field of environmental toxicology is based on synthetic chemicals of human origin and chemicals emitted by human beings to the environment. These chemicals are called “environmental pollutants” or “environmental contaminants de in the literature.

In environmental toxicology, the negative effects of environmental pollutants on human health are examined. In assessing the toxic effects of environmental pollutants on humans, standard animal models (such as mice, rats and zebra fish) are used as well as the assessment of aquatic organisms and invertebrate groups exposed to the chemical. In the field of ecotoxicology, which is considered as a sub-branch of environmental toxicology, the negative effects of environmental contaminants due to ecosystems, their components, plants, animals, all wildlife and the interaction of these components with each other are examined. This investigation is carried out in the natural habitats of living things that make up the ecosystems from the beginning of the food chain to the predator at the top. Although these two areas are separated from each other for practical reasons, there are important intersections; Determining the amount of environmental pollutants in plant and animal tissues, which is the field of ecotoxicology, is important and necessary in order to determine the sources and amounts that these organisms will be exposed to if they are consumed by other organisms and people in the food chain. On the other hand, the toxicological risks that other organisms in the biosphere may be exposed to may be predicted, albeit in part, by the release of chemicals (eg drugs), whose effects are known to humans in the environment.

In addition, a comprehensive review of the environmental impacts of pollutants should include the fate of these pollutants in the environment and their interaction with abiotic components of ecosystems. For these reasons, a comprehensive investigation of the negative effects of environmental pollutants is possible with the contribution of many scientific disciplines.

In ecotoxicology, there is an ecological hazard assessment process. However, the studies and the data obtained in the field of ecotoxicology, which is actually very important since human beings perceived the universe as human-centered until recently, are relatively less compared to those in the field of environmental toxicology. The field of ecotoxicology requires adequate training in general / systematic biology and animal physiology. In addition, basic toxicology and chemistry knowledge as well as analytical laboratory techniques and methods are essential knowledge in the field of ecotoxicology.
