Molecular Biology
Molecular Biology Section was founded in 1991 by Prof. dr. Tülin AKTAÇ. It is composed of 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant professor and, 2 research associates. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry I and II, Biochemistry Laboratory, Histology, Histology Laboratory, Endocrinology, Cell Biology Laboratory (required courses) and Antibiotics, Molecular Changes in Cancer Cells, Vitamins, Cell Communication Mechanisms, and Special Topics on Cell Biology (selective courses) are the contributions of Molecular Biology section to the undergraduate education. Molecular Biology section also contributes to graduate education by the courses of Biochemical Methods, Industrial Enzymes, Enzymatic Regulations, Biosensors, Human Biochemistry, Genome Organization and Regulation, Membrane Physiology, Fungal Enzymes, Techniques in Electron Microscopy, Cell Damage and Adaptation, Cell Signals, Oxidant Stress and Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms.
Since the foundation of section, 10 Ph.D. thesis, 24 M.Sc. thesis have been supervised by the academic staff of the section. In addition, academic staff have assigned in 38 BAP and 2 TUBITAK projects as principal investigators and researchers.
The research topics studied by the academic staff members are characterization and purification of enzymes and proteins, bio production and isolation of industrial enzymes like amylase, inulinase and protease, immobilization of enzymes by varying techniques, investigation of different applications by immobilized enzymes, determination of antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of natural compounds, the assessment of beta-glucan existence in fungi and its potential use in diabetes, investigation of the effects of some antioxidants and stem cell applications on ischemia reperfusion damage in gut, heavy metal toxicity in plants, apoptotic effects of some bacteria on cancer cell lines, toxicity of food additives, antioxidant and healing effects of proantocyanidine and fucoidane, varying oxidative stress parameters and effects of xenobiotics on these parameters, determination of gene expression levels of fungal enzymes and optimization of production conditions effecting gene expression levels in fungi. The studies performed by the members of division have been published in the journals indexed by SCI and SCI-Exp and other indexed journals.
